Kaitiaki Tohu Pai Award

The Kaitiaki Tohu Pai Award is reserved for those who have shown outstanding dedication to preserving and enhancing Southland’s environment.

Winner: Alan Watson

Invercargill and the wider Murihiku Southland community lost a passionate and driven environmental advocate following the passing of Alan Watson, earlier this year.

Driven by a desire to leave a better environment for the next generation, Alan was involved in numerous community groups and projects, particularly in the area of water quality.

Alan’s goal was to improve water quality in our region through public education, with a strong focus on urban communities and encouraging people to think about how their activities impact stormwater and water in our rivers, streams and estuary.

Alan was instrumental in organising and facilitating water quality themed education events in Invercargill over the past five years, including the annual Water Quality Awareness event in Invercargill which more than 12,400 people attended this year.

Alan made an outstanding contribution to environmental discussions in our communities and he leaves a lasting legacy through his community work.
