Submissions on joint Waituna Lagoon application have closed
Submissions on the joint resource consent application to open Waituna Lagoon to the sea by Te Rūnanga o Awarua, the Department of Conservation, and Environment Southland, closed on 3 September 2024.
Waituna Lagoon is part of the Awarua-Waituna wetland complex and recognised as a wetland of international significance. It is home to many species of native birds, plants, fish and insects and is a culturally important site for Ngāi Tahu.
Of the 50 submissions received, eight were in support, one was neutral, and 41 were opposed to the application. The co-applicants will now take time to assess the submissions and consider next steps.
An independent commissioner or commissioners will be appointed in due course to hear and determine the resource consent application. All submitters who wish to be heard will be able to have their say at the hearing.
Environment Southland and DOC are continuing to closely monitor the water level and the ecological health of the lagoon. More information can be found on the Waituna website: www.waituna.org.nz/
