Water users urged to be vigilant in Doubtful Sound
Environment Southland is investigating reports of an algal bloom in Crooked Arm, Doubtful Sound and whether this is connected to reports of fish deaths, jack mackerel, in the area.
Environment Southland team leader aquatic ecosystems Ash Rabel said while an algal bloom in this area is not uncommon, it is concerning as they can damage important ecosystems and be harmful for humans if touched or consumed.
“We’re urging water enthusiasts visiting Doubtful Sound to be vigilant about contact with the algal bloom, and to keep their equipment clean to avoid any spread of harmful species,” he said.
Samples are being analysed to understand if there is any relationship between the algal bloom and the fish deaths.
Fish collected from the area should be thoroughly cleaned and cooked before eating and shellfish should be avoided until there is clarity on the species causing the bloom.
Further information about the species of algae and the cause of the fish deaths should be known later next week when further advice can be provided.
