Catchment summaries aim to make freshwater science information more accessible for our communities at the catchment scale. The summaries gather a wide range of information relevant to each specific catchment, helping readers understand the social and environmental context, key challenges, and opportunities for improving freshwater.
The summaries are based on over six years of scientific research conducted in response to national legislation, much of it done in collaboration with our partners Te Ao Marama. The broader science package that supports these summaries is available through technical reports on the Environment Southland website.
Why are they useful?
Since 2018, a significant amount of science has been produced about freshwater in Murihiku Southland. This information, often found in large reports, is not easily accessible to the public. The summaries provide a base source of key information in a single document, making it easier for everyone to access.
The summaries will help you get a feel for the bigger picture within your catchment. It should help you situate yourself and your property within the broader context relating to freshwater.
You can learn about key freshwater issues, understand regional aspirations, and identify actions you can take to improve freshwater in their catchment.
