Effluent and milk spills keep team busy
Our compliance staff have been kept busy over the past 24 hours dealing with a number of concerning incidents. We are still gathering information, but can provide the following information.
On Monday afternoon (2 October) staff attended a significant effluent spill in the Limehills area that has affected a waterway feeding into the Otapiri Stream. We are unsure of the extent of the stream pollution but anybody taking stock water from the stream should be aware of the risk and make alternative arrangements. We also recommend keeping dogs out of the water. Compliance staff are investigating the incident and have supported the landowner with advice on managing the spill clean-up.
Following this, a further effluent discharge was reported to our compliance team in the Wyndham Letterbox Road area on Tuesday morning (3 October). It appears a large volume of effluent has been discharged onto a slope, eventually making its way into waterways between Robin Hood Road and Maple Glen. Our staff are investigating but there may be ongoing discharges from this site. Remedial work is being done, but care needs to be taken care in the area.
Meanwhile, a large quantity of milk was found spilt on the road on the corner of Woods Road and Drummond-Oreti Road at around lunchtime today (Tuesday 3 October). South Roads and the Fire Emergency NZ cleared it from the road, but we would like to hear from anybody who can provide information about the incident. Please call or private message us on Facebook.
No more information is available at this time, but we will continue to provide updates as information comes to hand.
