Media statement – Awarua fire
Integrated catchment management general manager Paul Hulse:
“Environment Southland is in regular contact with Fire and Emergency New Zealand as they battle the fire burning in Awarua. While we don’t have a direct role in the emergency, we are concerned due to its location in a wetland of international significance and the potential for devastating loss of flora and fauna.
As well as the close-knit Waituna community, the wider Southland community will be upset to see the fire burning in close proximity.
While Southland remains in a drought situation, Fire and Emergency NZ has confirmed that the water being used to control the fire comes from tarns within the wetland, the Waituna Lagoon and the sea.”
