Invercargill stop bank rabbit control
Environment Southland has engaged experienced contractors to undertake night shoots to assess and control numbers of rabbits in Invercargill.
Rabbits are causing damage to the stop bank infrastructure protecting the city, and shooting provides a more selective manner of controlling rabbit numbers which is safer for domestic pets.
Shooting will be undertaken over several nights from Monday 15th August till Monday 29th August. Shooting will take place from 6pm to 12am.
The control will take place on rural sections of the Waihōpai, Kingswell, Clifden and Kennington stop banks, the Waihōpai retention dam and spillway, and Otepuni and Kingswell rentention dams.
The contractors will also inspect the remainder of the stop banks to assess rabbit numbers but no shooting will take place in the urban area.
Following these initial assessments, further monthly night shoots may be required where high rabbit numbers are found.
