Waituna Lagoon - Public safety warning
News
The Waituna Lagoon was successfully mechanically opened to the sea on Wednesday, January 31 by Environment Southland.
The public is being urged to avoid the area around the opening to the sea.
This a dynamic and hazardous environment with steep faces, which can be mobile and move and change at short notice.
Anyone visiting the area should stay several hundred metres back from the area of the opening to the sea itself, and preferably avoid this area if possible.
Warning signs and barriers are being put in place.
The opening may remain for several weeks.
