Dangerous Dams Policy
Environment Southland's Dangerous Dams policy seeks to minimise the safety risks associated with dams in the region. The Council has a number of dam-related responsibilities including the development of policy on dangerous dams under the Building Act 2004.
In 2015, the Government decided that management of dam safety may be better dealt with under the Resource Management Act 1991. As a result, Environment Southland has halted development on its Dangerous Dams policy and is awaiting further advice from Government in relation to this matter.
