NZAS consents
Six of the discharge consents require inspecting. Environment Southland assesses compliance against the conditions listed in the six consents. Each have different conditions that need to be adhered to. These conditions include providing sampling results for different contaminants at varying frequencies. Environment Southland visits the site four times a year to audit the sampling and monitoring that NZAS has completed. You can see NZAS’ annual monitoring reports here: https://www.nzas.co.nz/pages/environmental-performance/
We are monitoring for NZAS’ consent conditions and also the effects of permitted activities under the proposed Southland Water and Land Plan.
Monitoring is conducted by the following methods:
- Site visits – to assess compliance at a moment in time against consent conditions and rules. This may include sampling of discharges and the receiving environment or inspections to confirm compliance with consent conditions.
- Desk top audit – based on data provided by the consent holder. We check that all monitoring has been undertaken in accordance with the monitoring schedule of the consent and that the results of the monitoring of the consent are within any limits described in the consent.
- Reactive – incident response. Environment Southland responds to environmental incidents reported by either NZAS staff or members of the public.
Environment Southland also investigates complaints and self-reported incidents.
